How Do I Clean Out a Parent’s House From Out of State?
Arrange a video walkthrough with someone local and make a room-by-room list before hiring a cleanout crew. Set aside papers, keepsakes, and anything the family still needs to review. Then schedule family pickups, any sale or donation pickups, and the final haul around the date the house needs to be empty.
How to organize a house cleanout remotely
1. Walk through every space
Ask your local contact to take one wide photo from each doorway and close-ups of items that need a decision. Include closets, the basement, garage, shed, and any off-site storage. Photograph tight stairs and doors so crews can see how bulky pieces will come out.
2. Separate the belongings you need to review
Set aside important papers, family photos, jewelry, and unopened boxes. If your parent is involved in the move, start with what they want and will need at the new place. Mark one area for items to keep or review, and point it out to everyone working in the house.
3. Set pickup dates and a cutoff
Give family members a clear date to collect anything they’re taking. Confirm what a donation provider will accept and where it will collect it. If you’re considering a sale, ask what happens to unsold items. Leave time for the final haul after those pickups.
4. Get completion photos before the crew leaves
Ask for photos from the same angles as the walkthrough. Have your local contact check the rooms and storage areas against the work list, confirm the items set aside are still there, and check that the house is secured after the last visit.
What to send the cleanout crew for a quote
- A room list with photos. Specify which spaces and items are included. For example, write “remove two empty metal shelves from the garage” instead of “clear the garage.”
- An access description. Show the route from the truck to the house and flag stairs, tight turns, or pieces that may need to come apart.
- A hold list. Identify items that must stay and who can approve changes if the crew finds something unexpected.
- A definition of done. Confirm whether the quote includes a sweep, when you’ll receive photos, and how the crew handles items it can’t take.
Example — Your sibling can visit on Saturday, and photos are next Friday
Use Saturday for the walkthrough and set aside family papers and any boxes you still need to review. Have your sibling label what stays and photograph the pieces available for pickup. If a donation provider can only come Tuesday, schedule the final haul after that appointment and send the hauler the revised list. Ask for completion photos Wednesday so there’s time to address anything missed before the photographer arrives.
