Should I Deep Clean Before or After Painting and Repairs?
Book the final deep clean after repairs and painting. Before work begins, clear the rooms and clean the surfaces that need to be painted. Once the repairs are finished, the painter’s coverings are out, and the crew has cleared its work area, bring in the cleaner. That keeps sanding dust, debris, and footprints from undoing the final clean.
The best order for repairs, painting, and cleaning
1. Clear the rooms and prep the surfaces
Move furniture away from the work areas and schedule bulky-item pickup early. Ask the painter who will handle wall prep, especially around greasy kitchen surfaces, dusty trim, and old scuffs. A targeted prep clean gives the crew access and helps you see which marks actually need paint.
2. Finish repairs that create dust or debris
Schedule patching, sanding, trim repairs, and similar work before painting and the final clean. Ask the crew what cleanup is included and who will remove leftover materials. Give the painter a clear handoff date if a different contractor is doing the repairs.
3. Paint and check the room before the crew leaves
Walk through the painted rooms and flag any touch-ups while the painter is still scheduled. Ask when nearby surfaces can be cleaned and when furniture can go back against the walls. Follow the paint manufacturer’s guidance before washing a freshly painted surface.
4. Deep clean, then reset for photos
Once the work area is cleared, have the cleaner finish the floors, sills, counters, fixtures, and other surfaces in the agreed scope. Return only the furniture and everyday items you want in the room. If possible, leave time for one final walkthrough before listing photos.
When it makes sense to clean something first
- You’re deciding whether a wall needs paint. Clean a small scuffed area and see how it looks when dry. That may settle the question before you request a painting quote.
- The crew needs access to a work surface. Clear and clean the area they’ll use, then save the full-room clean for after the work.
- You’re still living in the house. Keep the kitchen, bathrooms, and main walkways usable during the project. Schedule the final listing clean when the work in those rooms is complete.
Example: Listing photos are Friday
Suppose you need drywall patches in the entry, one living room wall repainted, and a whole-house clean. Clear those rooms first. Book the repairs and painting early in the week, with time for the work and any touch-ups. Schedule the cleaner after the painter confirms the rooms are ready, then walk through Thursday evening to check the floors, counters, and corners of each room that will be photographed.
If the paint work slips, tell the cleaner which rooms are ready. They may be able to clean those areas first and finish the work zones after the painter leaves.
