How Do I Get My House Ready to Sell in Two Weeks?
Work backward from your listing photo date. Walk through the house with your agent, book the work that needs outside help, and clear the rooms before repairs and painting start. Schedule the final clean after the dusty work and leave a buffer before the photographer arrives.
Use this two-week plan to get the house ready for photos and showings. If you’re still living there, keep a small set of everyday items handy and decide where they’ll go during photos.
Your 14-day home-sale prep plan
Days 1–2: Set the deadline and make one list
Confirm the photo date with your agent. Take a wide photo from the doorway of each main room, then look at the photos together. Pick the rooms and visible issues that need attention. Book hauling, repairs, painting, and cleaning early enough to leave room for delays.
Days 3–5: Clear the rooms and the work areas
Sort bulky items first so donation or hauling can happen while you finish the smaller decisions. Clear counters, floors, and access to walls that need work. Pick one out-of-the-way spot for packed boxes so they don’t migrate from room to room.
Days 6–10: Finish repairs and paint
Give the handyman a room-by-room list with photos. Group straightforward jobs such as loose cabinet pulls, sticking interior doors, or holes left by picture hooks. Finish patching and sanding before painting. Bring anything with an unclear cause to your agent or the appropriate specialist before scheduling cosmetic work around it.
Days 11–14: Clean, reset, and walk through again
Schedule the final clean after repairs and painting. Check the entry, kitchen, main living area, and bathrooms. Put away cords, bins, pet items, and anything you don’t want in the frame. Leave the day before photos for a final walkthrough and any small corrections.
If you only have one weekend
Ask your agent which rooms and exterior views will lead the listing. Start there. If the dining room is full of moving boxes, the entry has scuffed walls, and the kitchen counters are crowded, clear the boxes and counters first. Then decide whether cleaning or a paint touch-up will address the entry. That sequence lets you see the surfaces clearly before committing to more work.
- Friday: Confirm the photo priorities and arrange pickup for anything bulky.
- Saturday: Clear the priority rooms and complete the small jobs you can finish that day.
- Sunday: Clean the rooms, retake the doorway photos, and send your agent a short list of anything still open.
