How Do I Get Rid of a Mattress or Box Spring Before Moving?
Start with your city or town’s mattress collection or recycling instructions. Confirm whether it accepts both your mattress and box spring, what it charges, and when pickup is available. If the first available date is after you hand back the keys, check a recycler, retailer haul-away, or junk removal crew for an earlier option.
Four ways to get a mattress out before move day
City or town pickup
Check the instructions for your current address. Ask whether you need an appointment, whether the two pieces count separately, and when and where to put them out. In an apartment or condo, confirm the pickup location with management before moving anything into a shared area.
Recycler or transfer station drop-off
Ask what the site accepts, whether you need proof of residency or an appointment, and how fees are calculated. Check the hours and unloading instructions before arranging a vehicle or someone to help.
Retailer haul-away
If you’re buying a replacement, ask whether the retailer can collect the old mattress and box spring. Confirm the address. If your new bed is being delivered to your new home, you may need a separate pickup at the address you’re leaving.
Full-service junk removal
Use this option if you need someone to carry the mattress downstairs or want it collected with other furniture. Tell the crew how many pieces you have, where they are, and whether there are stairs or elevator restrictions. Ask for a price that covers the carry-out and any item fees.
What to confirm before you book
- Exactly what goes. List the mattress, box spring or foundation, and any frame as separate items. Mention a split foundation if it comes in two pieces.
- Condition and preparation. Ask how the provider handles wet, damaged, or infested items, and whether it requires a bag or cover.
- Where the crew will collect it. Confirm whether pickup is inside the unit, at the loading area, or at the curb. If it’s curbside, arrange for someone to get it there at the right time.
- The last day you can be there. Book pickup while you still have access. Leave time for a backup if the appointment changes or a piece is declined.
Example — Your town’s next pickup is after key return
You’re leaving a second-floor apartment Friday, and the town’s next pickup is Monday. Ask management whether there’s an approved pickup location and whether you can use it before Friday. If that won’t work, compare a recycler you can reach before the move with an indoor pickup that includes the stairs. Before booking either option, confirm that it covers both the mattress and the box spring.
Local rules matter. Massachusetts, for example, includes foundations and box springs in its mattress waste ban. Check the instructions where you live before putting either piece out with regular trash. MassDEP mattress and textile waste ban FAQ.
Trying to clear several bulky items before the move?
Bring a few photos, your pickup deadline, and the list of what needs to go. We’ll help you sort out what to book separately, what can go on the same truck, and what to confirm about stairs or building access before scheduling.
